Make a Windsor chair
Make a Windsor chair
**This course is now full. Details on the next one with availability can be found here**
London’s only dedicated green-wood chair-making course runs over 12 weekly sessions; it’s a commitment, but at the end you’ll have made your own Windsor side chair and be well on the way to being a confirmed wood-nut. It's also probably the best fun you can have on a weekday evening anywhere in town.
You’ll learn how to fashion fresh timber, straight from the log, into the chair’s main components – the legs, stretchers and spindles – using axe, drawknife and spokeshave.
You’ll then make your seat, using traditional ‘bottoming’ tools including the adze and travisher. Then it’s time for some bending – using steam and a bit of magic to bend the comb (top bit) of your chair to a nice head-cradling curve.
After a bit of jiggery-pokery to put it all together, you’ll have made your own heirloom and probably won some admirers in the process.
This course follows on well from either my introduction to green woodwork or stool-making courses. If you are interested in taking a combination of these courses I offer discounts for multiple bookings. Please contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss.
COURSE DATES AND TIMES
Due to popular demand I have recently incorporated turning on a traditional foot-powered lathe as a standard element of this course. The course will kick off with a longer session on the afternoon of Sunday 22 March, during which I will introduce you to these skills. Thereafter, it will run weekly on Wednesday evenings between 1900 and 2130 from 25 March. Please note, there will be a scheduled break week on Weds 20 May.
Course cost includes:
Basic materials are included, but there will be an additional charge for the seat timber. This will be £25-40, depending on what I have in stock at the time.
Copious quantities of tea, coffee, biscuits and occasionally cake will be supplied
As this course is time-limited, if you miss a class you may need to come along to a catch-up session in order to make sure you get over the line within the allotted dates and walk away with a finished chair. Please read my T&Cs for details on my catch-up and cancellation policies.
