Course details:
London’s only dedicated Windsor chair-making course runs over 12 weekly sessions; it’s a commitment, but at the end you’ll have made your own Windsor side chair and be well on the way to being a confirmed wood-nut. It's also probably the best fun you can have on a weekday evening anywhere in town.
You’ll learn how to fashion fresh timber, straight from the log, into the chair’s main components – the legs, stretchers and spindles – using an array of traditional hand tools and the magical foot-powered treadle lathe.
You’ll then make your seat, using some equally arcane tools, including the adze and travisher. We'll also explore the wonders of steam bending to shape the comb (top bit) of your chair to a nice comfortable curve.
After delving into some traditional chair-making joinery techniques to put the piece together, you’ll have made your own heirloom and probably won some admirers in the process.
COURSE DATES AND TIMES
Due to popular demand, learning to turn on a pole-lathe is now a core element of this course. The course will kick off with a longer session on the afternoon of Sunday 15 September, during which I will introduce you to these skills. Thereafter, it will run weekly on Wednesdays evenings between 1900 and 2130 from 18 September until 4 December. There will be a scheduled break week on Wednesday 30 October.

Basic materials are included, but there will be an additional charge for the seat timber. This will be £35-50, depending on what I have in stock at the time.
As this course is time-limited, if you miss a class you may need to come along to a catch-up session in order to make sure you get over the line within the allotted dates - these are subject to my own working schedule. Please read my T&Cs for details on my catch-up and cancellation policies.
