Make a Windsor chair
Make a Windsor chair
London’s only dedicated green-wood chair-making course runs over 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings; it’s a commitment, but at the end you’ll have made your own simple Windsor-style chair and be well on the way to being a confirmed wood-nut. It's also probably the best fun you can have on a Wednesday evening anywhere in town.
You’ll learn how to fashion fresh timber, straight from the log, into the chair’s main components – the legs, stretchers and spindles – using axe, drawknife and spokeshave. For the more adventurous, or for those who’ve taken part in my introductory courses, you can try your hand at turning these parts on a traditional foot-powered lathe.
You’ll then make your seat, using traditional ‘bottoming’ tools including the adze and travisher. Then it’s time for some bending – using steam and a bit of magic to bend the comb (top bit) of your chair to a nice head-cradling curve.
After a bit of jiggery-pokery to put it all together, you’ll have made your own heirloom and probably won some admirers in the process.
This course follows on well from either my introduction to green woodwork or stool-making courses. If you are interested in taking a combination of these courses I offer discounts for multiple bookings. Please contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss. Due to popular demand I have also recently started running one or two pre-course workshops covering the craft of turning on a traditional lathe, which can be used to fashion the legs and other round parts of your chair. If you would like to learn this, please let me know when you book your place and I will contact you to arrange this. Regrettably there is insufficient time to cover turning within the 10 scheduled weeks of the course.
Course cost includes:
Basic materials are included, but there will be an additional charge for the seat timber. This will be £20-40, depending on what I have in stock at the time.
Copious quantities of tea, coffee, biscuits and occasionally cake will be supplied
As this course is time-limited, if you miss a class you may need to come along to a catch-up session in order to make sure you get over the line within the allotted dates and walk away with a finished chair. I offer each student one complimentary catch-up class, but any further catch-ups will be charged at £30. All additional sessions are subject to my schedule at the time. Please also note that course bookings are non-refundable unless cancellations are made at least a month before the start date. Requests to transfer dates can sometimes be made depending on availability of places and at my discretion. For my full terms and conditions, click here.
